John Chevalier first began working as a Consultant for Genesis10 in 2010 and is in the midst of his fourth contract. He lives in Kansas City, MO and consults for a banking client as a technical project manager. Here, he discusses how a layoff paved the way for his first opportunity with Genesis10 and how technology has changed during his career.
In Kansas City, we had a big layoff at a former employer in 2009. I started looking around, and knew some people that were working for Genesis10. I applied and was hired on.
I like the people I'm working with. We accomplish a lot. At a previous employer, they would start something and nothing would get done. You would put a year or two into it and then they would just drop the project. It was nice to have projects that I was able to complete.
I'm just kind of free to do my job. I don't have people hovering over me all the time. As I said, I like the people I work with. I'm in a position where it's not critical that I'm working, but I'm working because I want to. I retired for a couple years and then received a call from a person I had previously worked with at Genesis10. They were looking for somebody to join the team. It was with people that I liked, so I went back.
I think the ability to have remote access in everything has been one of the biggest changes. Once the equipment is installed, you really don't have to touch it after that. You can get into it remotely. Also, there’s a lot more security. You now establish different, higher levels of security than you used to. That’s probably one of the most important things right now, with all the ransomware and everything else that's going on.
